About Shady Flat…

Shady Flat Cabin

Shady Flat Cabin

We’ve added a new page about the Shady Flat cabin, about 4 miles from Downieville up the Yuba River.

Shady Flat has been a conundrum for the Arts Council for a long time. The site is stunningly beautiful, and certainly has a lot of possibilities as a small public arts center (which interests me) – but we have to get the cabin under permit to the Forest Service before anything is possible.

We’ll be working with the Willmarth family to put some kind of program together around Shady Flat cabin. Stay tuned.

Sourdough Slim

Sourdough Slim

Audiences step back in time with an authentic vaudeville style cowboy show in the Will Rogers tradition.

Sourdough Slim is a veritable “one man Western extravaganza”, crooning Western classics, playing accordion, guitar and harmonica, dancing a jig, twirling a lariat, dishing out hilarious comedic sketches and letting loose with award winning yippie-ti-yi-yodeling.

A favorite entertainer at cowboy gatherings and county fairs around the country, he’s also played the big time, wowing audiences at venues including Carnegie Hall and The Kennedy Center. This show promises a rollicking good time for audiences of all ages.

Reinette Senum

Reinette Senum

Reinette Senum will recount her adventure through a very unique and animated presentation of storytelling, video and slides. Reinette became the first woman to cross Alaska alone in 1994 while filming the endeavor, herself, for National Geographic.

Highlights of this trek include cross-country skiing 600 miles down the frozen Yukon River pulling a 160 lb. sled in -55F temperature, building a canoe in an Athabascan native village and paddling 900 miles after spring break-up; without gun, radio or tent.

Reinette completed her 1,500-mile journey in 4 months and 6 days. The story of this journey puts most people on the edge of their seats, explains Reinette, simply because it generally takes the audience beyond their comfort zone and then ends the story with a wild and unexpected twist of fate.

A New Web Site for the Arts Council

Well, it’s about time — the Arts Council is finally making its way into the networked age.

Here is a little video talking about what’s here and how you can help keep this site alive.
